UK health authorities have recommended a “tougher” keto regimen than the US’s, with shoppers facing restrictions on where they can eat.
The UK’s Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) says the country’s National Health Service (NHS) and NHS England (NICE) have issued “urgent guidance” on what to eat in a “low-carbohydrate, low-fat diet”.
The HSCIC, which is run by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), says people should aim to consume around 70g of carbs per day.
They are also recommending restricting salt and sugar intake and limiting the consumption of processed foods and alcohol.
The guidelines also advise people to eat fewer sugary snacks and “dietary fibre” in order to prevent weight gain.
“The NHS advises that people who are overweight or obese should eat at least 75% of their daily energy intake from carbohydrate sources, and at least 30% of calories from fat,” the HSCIIC states.
“This recommendation is based on the premise that carbohydrate intake is associated with obesity, and that the amount of carbohydrates consumed by a population is more important than the amount they consume.”
The HSCP also advises people to restrict salt intake to no more than 0.5g per day, and to limit sugar intake to 1.5 teaspoons per day.
“But in the US, a dieter is not required to follow the guidelines.”

She’s been on the Atkins diet, which involves restricting carbs and high fat foods to around 50% of daily calories, and has also been following a low-carb diet.
“At first, I thought I was just going to do something to feel good, and then it just turned into this whole new thing,” she told Aljazeera.
“As I started to eat less and less carbs and more of a ketogenic diet, I started feeling really great.”
There was this feeling that it wasn’t as bad as it used to be, but you were really starting to feel like a normal person again.
“Bowersman said the Atkins approach has also helped her to lose weight.”
Now I’m definitely doing a low carb diet because I feel like it’s helped my overall health and overall happiness and it also has made me feel more comfortable around people.”‘
People should eat more’Health experts say people should eat around 70% of energy from carbohydrate foods, and avoid processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks.
They also advise that people should limit salt intake at 1.25 teaspoons per week, and limit sugar to no less than 1.3 teaspoons per month.”
